CALL FOR PROJECTS – “DIGITAL EUROPE. EUROPE OF THE FUTURE”
The call for projects is launched on the occasion of the fifth edition of the festival with the theme EuropeLights and it is intended for young, emerging artists, architects, and designers. The call is meant to present the public with the most innovative installations and to provide young artists with a platform through which they can make themselves and their projects known. This year, the call is meant to highlight the most creative projects based on light and on light-based technologies, with an emphasis on interactivity and on the public’s interaction with the work.
The themes of the call for projects
The theme that the participants will have to approach – by means of installations – is Digital Europe. Europe of the Future.
The participants are invited to propose interactive artistic light-based installations that should creatively deal with the topic of “digitalization” which is on the agenda of all the European States and thus to open up new perspectives, new approaches, and new ways of interpretation of the topic in the European context. In addition, the proposed projects will have to answer at least one of the following questions:
- “What Will Europe Look Like in the Future?”,
- “How Does One Translate Europe into the Digital Language?”,
- “Analogue versus Digital – Yesterday’s and Today’s Europe.”
Types of eligible projects
The types of projects that may be submitted are the following: innovative lights (sky tracers, architectural, show lights), conventional lights (LEDs, light bulbs, neon lights), kinetic sculptures with optical system (mirrors, kaleidoscopes, prisms), or any other type of artistic installation. Video mapping /projection mapping works are not accepted.
The applicants must be Romanian citizens, in the 18 to 30 age group. The participants must submit a project relevant to the theme of the festival and to devise a project sketch and a list with the materials required for the final production of the installation.
The application process
In order to apply for the contest, participants must fill in the participation form in which to include all the details related to the project. The form will be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org, by the deadline, alongside the participant’s logo (editable format.ai) or the author’s photograph (min. 150 dpi, jpg/png) and a selection of relevant images of the project sketches (renderings, demos etc.)
The application deadline is the 10th of March 2019.
The selection process
The projects will be selected by an international jury made of five jurors (four members and one president), who will give separate and independent grades (from 1 to 5) for each project. The project with the highest total score will be declared the winner.
After the application period is over, the organizers will analyze the projects and will announce the winner until the 15th of March 2019.
The prize and the allotted budget
The call for projects will have only one winner who will receive a 1000 Euro prize. For the production of the proposed work, the winner will be given a budget of maximum 5.000 euro.
The selection criteria are the following: innovation, the relevance for the concept of the festival (EuropeLights) and for the concept of the call for projects (Digital Europe. Europe of the Future), accessibility for the public, interactivity, feasibility.
The exhibition of the winning work
The winning project will be exhibited on the occasion of the fifth edition of Spotlight– the International Light Festival, between the 18th and the 21st of April 2019, in the pedestrian area behind Kretzulescu Church.
