During the three days of the Festival, visitors explored Calea Victoriei, where important buildings and public spaces in Bucharest hosted impressive multimedia works. The route started at the National Military Circle and continued with screenings and installations at the Odeon Theatre, the Palace of Telephones, the Novotel Hotel, the Music Store, the Revolution Square, the Central University Library, the National Museum of Art of Romania and George Enescu Square, and the end of the route was marked by a spectacular projection at the InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest.
The 2024 edition brought renowned international artists to Bucharest for the first time, who presented large-scale multimedia installations. Franco-German artist Julien Menzel exhibited his interactive projects Phénix and Echo, inviting the audience to become part of the artistic act. Visual artist Émilien Guesnard also presented asklipion, an innovative work exploring the relationship between nature, light and sound through 120 lamps housing frozen plants.
Romanian artists have addressed current themes of contemporary society through their light art works, exploring topics such as the connection between man and divinity or the impact of global warming. The Discoballs installation, located in front of the Muzica Store, has transformed the urban space into a meeting place for music lovers, bringing extra fun to Calea Victoriei through games of lights and animated textures.
The theme of this year's edition, Bucharest 565. Urban connections, marked more than five centuries since the documentary attestation of the city and highlighted the capital's distinctive architecture. Video mapping installations and multisensory projections have reconfigured the facades of historic buildings, bringing to life symbolic places of the city and providing a new dimension of light at the intersection of art, technology and architecture.
Spotlight 2024 continued to be the largest new media festival in the capital, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually and cementing its status as a top event on the visual arts and technology scene. Starting in 2023, the festival has become a member of The International Light Festivals Organisation, the global network of light festivals, connecting Bucharest to major events of this kind around the world.
